Gambling As A Decent Sport: Is It Really?
We don't often hear people refer to gambling as a decent sport; as a matter of fact, it has been always regarded in the same level as smoking or drinking. Indeed gambling is a vice, and its praises are rarely sung. Some people though, point out the lighter side of gambling, based on what game they play. For instance, people who play poker insist that the game is based on skill, and though regarded as gambling, should have a respectable image. According to them, therefore, poker is a decent sport, and should not cause any harm to those who play the game.
The only way that gambling can be regarded in decency is if it enriches the human mind, it is reasonable, and doesn't prey on gamers, who eventually fall into addiction. Gambling should have its decent image if it is used for positive ends: that is to use it for social interaction and recreation, and use the funds for a building a country's economy.
But that is not the case. In such cases, in recent years, more and more countries are legalizing gambling, such as it was in Australia, and this event saw the increase of casinos and sports betting in the country. This growth has also made gambling more accessible to the public. When new players are introduced to gambling, many are unable to shake off the addictive effects. This has contributed to the increasing incidence of problem gambling.
To determine the answer to whether gambling is a decent sport or not, you must ask yourself two questions: what humane fulfillment can you get out of gambling? Does gambling produce a positive effect over the gambler and the members of his society? More often than not, the answer to this question is no, with the worst possible scenario happening as the gambler's life crumbles to ruins as the gambling addiction takes over his senses.
One survey showed that one reason why people gamble is that it gives them hope for a better life for themselves and their family. This is a highly defective view as one's future should not be handed over to chance, but must be attained through hard work and honest effort.
It's true that there may be some acceptable or harmless instances of gambling, but if you gamble for high stakes, usually you have crossed the line, from seeing gambling as a mere source of recreation, to a game that bears the promise of fulfilling your hopes and dreams.
Gambling may be wrongful or harmful, but in the end, the question of its decency should be answered personally and subjected to close scrutiny by your own conscience.
